Why I Became a Pasadena Immigration Attorney

Why I Became a Pasadena Immigration Attorney

My family came to the United States the same way many of my clients did.

My parents were immigrants. They came to this country from Mexico and El Salvador looking for something better — safety, opportunity, a future they could not build at home. They navigated a system that was not designed to be easy, in a language that was not their first, in a country where they did not yet know the rules.

I grew up watching them figure it out. And I grew up understanding, at a level most people never have to think about, what it costs a family to be uncertain about where they belong.

That is why I became an immigration attorney. Not because the law was interesting — though it is — but because I knew what it felt like to live on the other side of it.

Growing Up With Immigration as a Family Matter

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. My heritage is Mexican and Salvadoran, and immigration was never an abstract topic in our home. It was the story of how we got here.

When I was young, I saw what it looked like when families did not have the right guidance. I saw good people make mistakes on their paperwork that set them back years. I saw families separated by processes they did not fully understand. I saw people pay for help from the wrong person and lose both the money and the case.

I also saw what it looked like when someone had real, knowledgeable help. The difference was not just paperwork. It was clarity. It was someone who knew the system explaining every step so there were no surprises. It was a family who could sleep at night because they understood where their case stood.

That difference stayed with me.

From Paralegal to Attorney: 25 Years in Immigration Law

I did not start my career as an attorney. I started as an immigration paralegal, working directly with the cases, the forms, and the families.

That time as a paralegal was the most important education I ever got. It taught me how cases actually move through the system. It taught me what goes wrong and why, what a denial letter really means, and what options exist when a case hits a wall. It gave me the ground-level knowledge that no law school course can teach you.

When I earned my J.D. from Taft Law University and passed the California Bar, I did not stop doing the work. I kept doing it. I have now spent more than 25 years in immigration law — first as a paralegal, then as the founding attorney of Perez Legal Group here in Pasadena.

In that time, I have helped thousands of families, employers, and individuals navigate the US immigration system. Green cards. H-1B visas. Family petitions. Employer sponsorships. Investor visas. Cases that were approved the first time, and cases that required appeals and motions to reopen.

Every one of those cases had a person behind it.

What It Means to Practice Law From the Inside

There is something that changes when an attorney has lived what their clients are living.

I do not need to imagine what it feels like to wait for a decision from USCIS and not know what it will say. I do not need to imagine what it means to have a family member abroad while you are here, hoping the petition moves quickly. I do not need to imagine the fear that comes with a system that feels opaque and unforgiving.

I know those feelings. My family knew them.

That knowledge shapes how I practice. It is why I answer my clients' calls personally, or return them the same day. It is why I explain every step of the process before we take it, not after. It is why I use plain language instead of legal jargon, because the goal is for my client to understand their case, not to be impressed by my vocabulary.

Bilingual service is not a feature we added to be competitive. It is a reflection of who I am and who my clients are. Spanish is a language I grew up speaking, and it is the language in which many of the most important conversations in my office happen.

Why Pasadena

I chose to build my practice in Pasadena for the same reason I do this work at all: this is where the community is.

The San Gabriel Valley has one of the largest immigrant communities in Southern California. Families here come from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Korea, the Philippines, China, India, and dozens of other countries. They are our neighbors. Their children are in our schools. They work in our hospitals, our restaurants, our construction sites, our engineering firms.

They deserve an attorney who shows up for them.

Perez Legal Group is not a high-volume immigration factory. We are a boutique firm. When you hire us, you work with me directly — not a paralegal, not an associate, not a case manager who hands you off. I handle every case personally.

That is the commitment I made when I opened this firm, and it is one I have kept for more than two decades.

Hispanic Heritage Month: A Personal Reflection

This month, as Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, I find myself thinking about the clients I have had the privilege of serving over the years.

I think about the families who came to my office uncertain and left with a plan. I think about the professionals who finally got the work visa they had been waiting for. I think about the couples who saw a green card approved after a long and difficult process. I think about the business owners who were able to bring the talent they needed to grow.

Behind every one of those cases was a person who had the courage to come here and build something. My job is to make sure the law does not stand in the way of that.

If you or someone you know is navigating an immigration question — whether it is a green card, a visa, a family petition, or something more complicated — I am here.
